By default, an individual User can follow or subscribe to a maximum of 500 records and Users in Chatter. If a User has hit this limit, they will receive the error "You are subscribed to the maximum number of records. Unsubscribe from another record and try again.". This limit can be raised as high as 2,000 by making a request with Salesforce Support.
Note: As a best practice, implement an unfollow process to prevent Users from exceeding your new limit.
