You may observe that the Automated Process User or System User is credited with actions in the Setup Audit Trail, or that this user appears in the Last Modified By field on certain setup records in your Salesforce organization. The Automated Process User and System User are built-in Salesforce system entities. Their settings, permissions, and values cannot be modified by administrators or users.

Why the Automated Process User or System User Appears in Setup Audit Trail

The Automated Process User is a built-in Salesforce system entity that exists in every organization from the time it is created. Salesforce uses this user to make automated system-level changes in the course of providing services and features in your organization. This behavior is normal and expected.
Examples of changes the Automated Process User may make:

  • Updates to Salesforce packages such as Salesforce for iOS and Android, and Chatter packages.
  • Creating Chatter Free users from email invitations.
  • Assigning Live Agent transcripts.
  • Updating page layouts after a custom field is deleted.

Note: The Automated Process User cannot be deactivated, modified, or deleted.

How to Sync the Automated Process User Timezone to Match the Company Timezone

In some older Salesforce organizations, the Automated Process User timezone may not match the Company Information timezone. This mismatch can cause discrepancies in time-stamped records and audit entries. You can force a timezone synchronization without making any configuration changes.
Best Practice: Test in a Sandbox environment first to confirm there is no disruption to custom processes. Once confirmed, perform the same steps in production.
Steps to Sync:

  1. Navigate to Setup, then go to Company Settings, then Company Information.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save without changing any fields.

Result: The system automatically updates the Automated Process User timezone to match the organization's default timezone.
