The Quip Document Component is a Lightning component that administrators add to Salesforce record pages, allowing users to create, view, and collaborate on Quip documents without leaving Salesforce. Documents created from the component are automatically attached as Files to the Salesforce record and can be pre-populated with record field values using mail merge syntax. This article explains how to configure the component, set up templates, and understand how document access interacts with Salesforce record security.
To add the Quip Document Component to a Salesforce record page, you must be a Salesforce administrator with access to the Lightning App Builder.
Example: A sales operations team adds the Quip Document Component to the Opportunity page using a Mutual Success Plan template. When a rep opens a new enterprise opportunity, they click Use Template in the component, and a pre-filled Mutual Success Plan document is created, attached to the Opportunity record, and ready for the rep to share with the customer.
Mail merge allows a Quip template to automatically pull values from the Salesforce record when a new document is generated. In your Quip template, insert field values using the following syntax: {{!FieldAPIName}} (for example, {{!Account.Name}} to insert the Account name).
When a user generates a document from the component, Quip replaces these placeholders with the actual field values from the Salesforce record. This eliminates manual data entry and ensures the document contains accurate information from the moment it is created.
By default, users who have access to the Salesforce record can also access the embedded Quip document, based on the Synced Sharing configuration set by your Quip administrator. Access levels can be set to No Access, View Only, Comment, Edit, Full Access, or match the Salesforce record's access level. See Document Access in Quip for full details on how Synced Sharing works.
Every document generated from a Quip Document Component is automatically attached to the Salesforce record as a File in the record's Files component. This makes documents discoverable in Salesforce search and accessible from the Files related list, even without direct Quip access.
