Modifying layer settings allows you to customize the look and feel of your map. It also ensures you have the appropriate visual context to understand the map at a glance.

This article explains how to customize the appearance of your Territory Planning map using the Layers tab, so you can adjust visibility, labels, and styling for each layer type.

Accessing the Layers Tab

When you open an alignment within Territory Planning, you will notice the legend sidebar on the right-hand side of the screen. You can configure your map styling using the Layers tab. Layers need to be configured for each alignment you work with but are saved after you set them up for future use. The Layers tab allows you to show/hide each layer type independently, add area center, unit, or container labels to the map, and modify symbol styling. Note that the settings are saved per user, but shared whenever a user shares an alignment or area.

Layer Types and Settings

When you click the Layers tab, you can see all the areas where a map can be styled. Editing each layer is generally the same, with the first section being unique to that layer type and the remaining sections used for label control settings.

Area Centers

Area Centers represent the geographic or weighted centers of an area. You can change the visibility by clicking on the Eye icon on the right and shade the area center by their area's color or use one color for all area centers.

Overlay

You can add overlays to your alignment from this section in the form of a Heat Map, Choropleth Map, Additional Boundaries, and another Alignment. More details about these options can be found here.

Unit Layer

There will be one layer per data source selected when building the dataset. You can adjust the map marker and size, which makes it easy to differentiate between multiple unit types. Note that hiding a unit type does not remove it from focus.

Boundary Layer

There will be one layer per boundary selected when building the dataset. This layer allows you to outline detailed tracing for each individual boundary (e.g., zip code). The Consider for Shading option will add cross-hatching if the assignment values conflict inside of an individual boundary. For example, Account 1 is in ZIP 12345 and assigned to Territory 1; however, ZIP 12345 is assigned to Territory 2. In this case, ZIP 12345 will appear cross-hatched if Accounts is checked, and solid if not.

Label, Font, and Label Control Settings

If a layer supports labels, then users can adjust the following settings:

  • Label Settings - Users can use any two fields from the object that they are labeling. If a user selects a secondary label, they can also adjust the separator. If a user selects a numeric field as a label, they can use % Focus to change its value to the indexed form.
  • Font Settings - Users can specify font size, color, and halo (shaded border).
  • Label Control Settings - Users can filter out labels by a numeric value (for example, only show labels for accounts with greater than $1,000,000 in revenue). This can be useful for seeing high-value units or clearing the map of empty labels for boundaries. Users can also allow duplicate and/or overlapping labels.

Base Layers

The Map section contains the Labels, Roads, and Background base layers. These can be turned on/off to gain more context when working with your map using the Eye icon on the right. Labels represent the cities/states, Roads represent the road network, and the Background represents the geography behind the territories. The level of detail shown for these layers changes dynamically as you zoom in/out on the map. These three layers are present in all Territory Planning alignments created.
