Quip allows you to insert date mentions in documents and chat messages by typing @date followed by a date. Date mentions become clickable links that display the date in a readable format, and can optionally trigger reminders — notifications sent to you or mentioned users at a specified time before the date. This article explains how to insert dates, set reminders, and manage them.
To insert a date in any Quip document or chat message:
The date appears as a formatted, clickable link in the document. Other users see the date formatted for their local timezone.
Example: A project manager writes "Please submit your feedback by @June 20" in the project plan. Team members see the date formatted in their local timezone and can click it to add it to their calendar.
When you insert a date mention, you can optionally set a reminder that sends you or @mentioned users a notification before the date:
Pro tip: You can set reminders for teammates too. Include them with an @mention in the same paragraph or row as the date, and they'll receive the notification as well.
To view or edit an existing reminder, click the date link in the document. The reminder popover shows the current settings. Click Edit Reminder to change the timing or recipients, or Remove Reminder to delete it.
Reminders are delivered as Quip notifications in your Quip inbox and, if configured, as push notifications on your mobile device. Reminders do not create calendar events in external calendars like Google Calendar or Outlook — they are Quip-internal notifications only.
Quip lets you adjust how dates are displayed at three different levels: a single document, your whole account, or a specific range of spreadsheet cells.
To change the date format used in one document, click Document, hover over Advanced, and select Change Date Formatting. Choose the country whose date format you want to use, then click Done. All dates entered in that document afterward follow the new format.
To set your preferred date format across your whole account:
All new documents you create default to this date format going forward.
In spreadsheets, you can apply a custom date and time format — including the ISO 8601 standard — to any range of cells:
Outside of custom formatting, dates in Quip spreadsheets are cell values rather than @mentions. To insert a date in a spreadsheet cell, type the date directly or use a formula like `=TODAY()`. Date @mentions and reminders are a document feature and are not available inside spreadsheet cells.
