Auto Suppression Lists, Suppression Lists, and Exclusion Lists are similar features that are easy to confuse. The following describes the characteristics of each — choose the one that best fits your use case and environment.

 

All three lists work by specifying subscribers to exclude from a send audience, preventing them from receiving messages. For example, even if a subscriber is included in a sendable data extension, use these lists when you need to ensure that subscriber is not sent to.

Auto Suppression Lists

Identifies subscribers by email address. Email addresses stored in this list are automatically excluded from all sends — no additional configuration is required at send time. Once the list is created, sends are excluded without any special action during send setup.

Note: If Auto Suppression Lists is enabled but the Auto Suppression Configuration option is not visible under the steps below, the feature may not be activated. Contact Salesforce Support to request enablement.

How to create:
Navigate to Email Studio > Admin > Send Management > Auto Suppression Configuration to create a list.

Suppression Lists

Identifies subscribers by subscriber key. Setting a subscriber key to Unsubscribed or Held excludes the linked subscriber from sends.

How to create:
Navigate to Email Studio > Subscribers > Suppression Lists to create a list.
 
How to configure:
  • For Automation Studio:
    In the Edit Email Send Activity screen, under Select Audience, select Suppression Lists from the dropdown. Drag the suppression list to the Excluded and Suppressed items area.
  • For Journey Builder:
    In the Edit Email Send Activity screen, under Delivery Options, select from Suppression Lists.

Exclusion Lists

Usage is similar to Suppression Lists. The difference is that exclusion lists do not need to be managed under Email Studio > Subscribers > Suppression Lists — they can be managed using any sendable data extension.

The configuration method is also the same, but you specify a data extension instead of a list.
 
  • For Automation Studio:
    In the Edit Email Send Activity screen, under Select Audience, select Data Extension from the dropdown. Drag the data extension to the Excluded and Suppressed items area.
  • For Journey Builder:
    Exclusion lists cannot be configured directly in Journey Builder. Use Suppression Lists or an Exclusion Script instead.
