Marketing Cloud Engagement | Sending Emails to Salesforce Audiences Using Automation

Publish Date: Oct 13, 2022
Description

Explains how to send emails to Salesforce Audiences (Reports, Campaigns, and Salesforce Data Extensions) from Automation Studio and Journey Builder. Emails sent using this method return tracking data to Salesforce.

Resolution

For Automation Studio

Use the Salesforce Email Send activity instead of the standard Send Email activity.
Send definitions targeting Salesforce Audiences can be created under Email Studio > Interactions > Salesforce Email Sends.

Note:
If the Salesforce Email Send activity is not visible, verify that the Marketing Cloud user is linked to a Salesforce user. Click the user name under Setup > Users > Users to check the link status under Salesforce.com Status.

For Journey Builder

Salesforce Data Extensions cannot be used as the send audience (entry source) in a journey. Use a Filter or SQL Query activity to store lead and contact information in a standard data extension, then specify that data extension as the entry source.

Note:
The data extension must include an attribute that stores the 18-character Salesforce record ID, linked to the subscriber key.
