Engagement - Connect your Marketing Cloud user with your Salesforce user

When Marketing Cloud Connect is configured but a user's Marketing Cloud account is not linked to their Salesforce user, Salesforce Data features are unavailable — including Salesforce Data Events in Journey Builder, Send to Salesforce Reports, and Send to Salesforce Campaigns. User integration must be completed from both the Marketing Cloud side (via Setup > Users) and the Sales or Service Cloud side (via the Marketing Cloud Tab). This article covers both steps and common errors encountered during the integration process

Connect your Users in Marketing Cloud Engagement

  1. Login to your Marketing Cloud Engagement Account with your User.
  2. Hover over your username in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and click "Setup".
  3. Under Administration, expand "Users".
    1. Log in to your Marketing Cloud account.
    2. Hover over your username in the upper-right corner and click Setup.
    3. Under Administration, expand Users.
    4. Click Users, then click your username.
    5. Click Salesforce.com Integration Status.
    6. Click Integrate.
    7. Enter your Salesforce.com username.
    8. Click Save Settings.

Note: If you don't have access to perform these actions, please work with your Marketing Cloud Engagement Administrator to complete them. 

Connect Your Users in Sales or Service Cloud

  1. In a separate window, log in to your Sales or Service Cloud instance with your user.
  2. Navigate to the Marketing Cloud Tab within Salesforce.
  3. Click “Connect to Marketing Cloud”.
  4. If you are logged into your Marketing Cloud user in the same browser, clicking this button will automatically link the accounts.
  5. If you are not still logged in, you will be prompted to enter your Marketing Cloud Engagement user credentials and this will complete the user integration.

Troubleshooting: Error Communicating with Salesforce

If you receive the error "There was an error communicating with Salesforce, verify your connected app is set up properly and try again" after entering your Salesforce username in Marketing Cloud, your Salesforce user is likely missing required permissions. Ensure the following are configured on your Salesforce user:

  • The Marketing Cloud for AppExchange User permission checkbox is selected on the user profile.
  • The Marketing Cloud for AppExchange Admin checkbox is selected (if the user is an Admin).
  • The Marketing Cloud Connected App permission set is assigned to the user.
