Associating Contacts to Multiple Accounts Using dataloader.io

While the Data Import Wizard can be used to import Accounts and Contacts, it does not support associating a single Contact to multiple Accounts. To achieve this, use dataloader.io from MuleSoft and import records into the Account Contact Relationship object.

This article assumes:

  • Account and Contact records already exist.
  • The setting “Allow users to relate a contact to multiple accounts” is enabled in Setup.

If you are creating new records, perform three separate imports:

  1. Accounts
  2. Contacts
  3. Account Contact Relationships

To associate Contacts with multiple Accounts, you will import data into the Account Contact Relationship object using dataloader.io from MuleSoft.

Step 1: Prepare a CSV File
Create a .csv file with the following columns:

  • Contact Full Name (or Email)
  • Email (recommended if available)
  • Account

Example:

Step 2: Import Using dataloader.io

  1. Go to dataloader.io and log in with Salesforce.
  2. Click New Task → Import.
  3. Select Insert as the operation.
  4. Choose Account Contact Relation as the object.
  5. Upload your .csv file.

Field Mapping:

  • Map Account → Account ID
    • Enable Lookup Via → select Account Name
  • Map Email → Contact ID
    • Enable Lookup Via → select Email

Alternative (if Email is unavailable):

  • Map Contact Full Name → Contact ID
    • Enable Lookup Via → select Full Name
  1. Click Next.
  2. (For Starter Edition) Ensure Use Batch API (200 records) is selected.
  3. Click Save & Run, then Run.

Step 3: Verify Results
After the import completes:

  • Open the Contact record in Salesforce.
  • Confirm the Contact is related to the correct Accounts.
