Locate the Live Tracking Settings

  1. Open the Salesforce Maps mobile app.
  2. Click the Settings wheel in the top left corner.
  3. Click the arrow between "Live Location" and the toggle button.

Enable on App Launch

  • This allows Maps to automatically toggle on the "Live Location" setting when you open the app.
    • Note: The device's privacy setting must be set to "Always".

Automatic Shut Off

  • This allows Maps to automatically toggle off the "Live Location" setting when the app is open or running in the background. This will occur daily and at the time of your choice.

Locate the Live Tracking Advanced Settings

  1. Open the Salesforce Maps mobile app.
  2. Click the Settings wheel in the top left corner.
  3. Click the arrow between "Live Location" and the toggle button.
  4. Click Advanced Settings.

View Location Log -

  • This section shows the data that is queued up to be sent to our database for ingestion. This data is set to clear automatically at the time specified on your "Post Interval" setting. However, there are times where the logs will get backed up. Please click the "Clear" button if you notice a large amount of Events or when advised to by support.
  • If a device has little or no cellular service, those location updates will remain in the location log until there's a connection. If there is a lack of cellular service for periods of time, there is a chance the operating system of the device will reallocate the memory and some data will be lost. There is no set time frame of when this will occur as this depends on what other apps they have running, how much storage is on their device, etc. When plotting tracking history, these gaps in tracking usually appear as straight lines.

Motion Tracking Enabled - large impact on battery

  • Enhancement that allows app to compare GPS with accelerometer and WiFi data to determine if device is at rest and reduce number of unnecessary location submissions. Motion capture increases drain on battery by incorporating additional sensors, but reduces the amount of submissions of “bad data” by removing unnecessary duplicates.

Request Interval

  • Frequency of location saved locally to device. The device writes location data to the local “Live Location Logs” following parameters set in the Request Interval.

Post Interval- large impact on battery

  • Frequency of cached locations uploaded to MAIO server. The device clears out the local logs when a successful request is synchronized. This has a large impact on battery since it requires a network call and looks for a response from the server, a relatively process intensive procedure.

Accuracy

  • Platform specific definition that permit the device to only capture locations above a certain quality. (for example, driving through a tunnel may reduce quality of GPS data, higher accuracy will remove those corrupted pings). Higher accuracy has a slight impact on battery, since it requires running an extra process to remove corrupted ping data.

Battery Saving best practices

  • Motion Tracking Enabled - Toggled Off (maybe required for some devices to use live tracking)
  • Request Interval - 30 seconds
  • Post Interval - 120 seconds
  • Accuracy - Low
    • Note: that this may result in a higher rate of outlier or corrupted data in poor network/GPS performance situations
