Use custom images as markers in Maps

With Maps Marker Layers, you are able to use the preset marker images or your own custom image. In order to upload custom images as markers, you can either upload that image as a Document in Salesforce or upload the image as a File in Salesforce. Note that the Documents object has been deprecated in Salesforce Lightning so users must use Files in Lightning.

Uploading as a Document (Classic Only)

  1. Locate the Documents tab. If it is not added to your custom tabs at the top of your Salesforce org, click on the gray plus sign and it will be in your list of All Tabs.
  2. Under Document Folders, click SF Maps Documents and click Go.
  3. Click New Document at the top of the list of documents.
  4. Enter details about this document and ensure that it will be located in the SF Maps Documents folder.
  5. Check the box labeled "Externally Available Image."
  6. Select a file to upload, and click Save.
Note: the best way to size- width= 35 to 55 pixel; height= self scale. PNG files with transparent backgrounds are best


Uploading as a File (Lightning)

  1. Click on the Application Launcher and select Files.
  2. Navigate to the Libraries tab.
  3. Click New Library.
  4. Name the library "SF Maps Files".
    • Note: The library must be named this.
  5. Navigate to your newly created library and click Add Files to upload a custom image.
  6. Click Upload Files to retrieve a file from your computer.
    • Note: Files must have an extension of jpg or png.
  7. Once an image is selected, click Add then Done.
  8. Next, you will want to give users access to use these images in Maps. Click Manage Members.
  9. Search by either user or group by clicking the down arrow in the Add Members Search Box, give them a level of access and click Add.
Note: Library Administrator will give users administrator level access to the library including the ability to both manage members and files, author will allow users to add files to the library, and viewer will only allow read access to files in the library. Users will need at least viewer access in order to use custom images in Maps.   


Use the Custom Image as Marker in Maps

  1. Open Maps, and create a new or edit an existing Marker Layer.
  2. Click the Display Options tab.
  3. For Uniform Marker Style, select Custom Marker Type.
  4. Choose the Custom Marker Image you just uploaded.
  5. Click Save & Plot.
