What is a Hidden Triggered Send Managed List in Marketing Cloud?

  • The Hidden Triggered Send Manage Lists is a hidden list that is used when no List is selected in a Triggered Send. This list cannot be viewed in the Marketing Cloud UI and is difficult to manage as a result.

What is a Triggered Send Managed Subscriber?

  • Triggered Send Manage Subscribers are stand alone subscribers and will count as a contact for billing purposes. Triggered Send Manage Subscribers can share an email address and subscriberKey with a Subscriber on the All Subscribers List, but is considered separate because it will have a unique subscriberID. Triggered Send Manage Subscribers cannot be viewed in Email Studio Lists in the same way as All Subscribers or Publication Lists.

*Note: Although Triggered Send Manage Subscribers have a different SubscriberID, SubscriberKey is used to de-duplicate for contact counts.

    ex.
Subscriberkey: email123 SubscriberID: 1234 in All Subscribers
Subscriberkey: email123 SubscriberID: 7890 in Triggered Send Manage List

Although they are two different SubscriberIDs and records, they will only count as 1 record towards billable contacts.
Deleting SubscriberIDs from the Triggered Send Manage List will not reduce billable contacts if they have a matching ContactKey in Email Studio.

Why would we use a Triggered Send Manage Subscriber List?

  • Most users have unintentionally used Triggered Send Manage Subscriber Lists. Previously included features in the Marketing Cloud such as Salesforce V2/V3 and MSCRM used Triggered Send Manage Lists. Some users unintentionally use the Triggered Send Manage List by not selecting a List to associate to a Triggered Send.
  • As of March 2022, there are nearly zero use cases which warrant the use of the Triggered Send Manage List. If an account has been using the Triggered Send Manage List for a years and as a result is heavily invested, they may have a cause for continuing to use this list. However it will present unnecessary complications and additional work to maintain the list. It should be adopted as a medium to long term strategy to move away from the Triggered Send Manage List and use the All Subscribers List or a genuine Publication List instead.

How can I change the status of a Triggered Send Manage Subscriber from Held to Active?

  • Since the List/Subscriber is not visible in the Marketing Cloud UI, the typical step to Change Subscriber status from ‘Held’ to ‘Active’ do not apply.
  • It is possible to update via API, but will require a developer skill set.
  • Under some circumstances, Marketing Cloud Support can update the status of Triggered Send Manage Subscribers. However it should be understood that this process is subject to change and if there is not a valid use case for using Triggered Send Manage Subscribers then Support may suggest deleting the Triggered Send Manage Subscribers and prevent new ones from being created by adopting use of the All Subscribers or Publication List in all Triggered Sends.
