The email address used in a Journey Builder Email Activity is determined by the Default Email Address setting in Journey Settings. This setting also affects how subscriber records are updated in All Subscribers.

The email address used in a Journey Builder Email Activity is determined by the selection made for Default Email Address in Journey Settings. The behavior differs depending on the option selected.

When "Use email attribute from Entry Source" is selected

The email address used is the value of the email attribute field in the entry source data extension. Internally, the email is sent to this address, and the system automatically updates the subscriber's record in the All Subscribers list with this email address at send time.
 

When "Use email attribute from Contacts" is selected

The email address used is the one registered in All Subscribers or the target data extension (Population or Synchronized data extension) specified under Use email attribute of contact (※).
Internally, the system looks up the subscriber key passed from the entry source in the specified All Subscribers or target data extension:
  • If the subscriber key is found, the email is sent to the email address associated with that subscriber key.
  • If the subscriber key is not found in All Subscribers or the target data extension, the subscriber key results in an error at the time of entry into the Email Activity.
 
Note: (※).
In a Field-Level Encryption (FLE) environment, the email address from the population is used instead of All Subscribers.
 
 
As described above, the email address used in the Email Activity and the records updated in All Subscribers vary depending on the Default Email Address selection in Journey Settings. Ensure you understand the behavior described above before configuring the Default Email Address in Journey Settings.
