Create Salesforce Report on Duration of Opportunity Stage

Below are the steps on how to report on Opportunity Stages (in days).

  1. From the Home page, click the Reports tab.
  2. Click New Report.
  3. Choose the Opportunity History as the report type and select Start Report.
  4. In the report edit page, include the fields that you'd like. However, the two columns that should appear by default are “From Stage” and “To Stage”. Together, these show you Opportunity Stage field changes and how long that period lasted (“Stage Duration” field).
  5. Also, include the Stage duration field in the report. It's easier to analyze the report if you have the  “From Stage”, “To Stage”, and the "Stage Duration" fields next to one another and ordered respectively.
  6. Select the drop-down arrow in the Stage Duration field.
  7. Select Summarize.
  8. Make sure that both the Sum and Average are selected to display at the top of your report.
  9. Check and adjust your filters to determine if you are looking at just your opportunities or all opportunities, as well as the correct Opportunity close date.
  10. Save, give your report a name, and Run.
 
Note: The stage duration refers to the total number of days that an opportunity has spent in the current stage from the time it entered that stage until it moves to the next stage. For example, if an opportunity moves into the Proposal stage, stays there for 2 days, then moves into Negotiation, and later moves back into Proposal for another 3 days, the stage duration in reports will only show the duration between the first two stages, which is 2 days. This differs from paths, where the total time spent in a stage is accumulated, amounting to 5 days in the given example.
