Learn how to set up and use the Quip app for Slack.
Quip can be integrated with Slack. The app enhances workflows with the following capabilities:
To add Quip to your Slack workspace, go to Quip.com/Slack (recommended) or Quip in Slack’s App Directory. Note: Quip site admins are recommended to enable the integration. The app will get added to all channels and DMs in your workspace.
Securely preview links to Quip docs in Slack channels. Paste a document link into a Slack channel or direct message and post it. The link will unfurl below the message as a document preview, if you have permission to share it.
If you post a link to a document that’s not shared with everyone in the channel, Quip will prompt you with a message to enable link sharing for the Quip document. If you choose to do so, anyone with the link in your organization can view and edit the Quip document, making it easier for your team to collaborate on it.
Note: Once a link preview is shown, all members of the channel will be able to see the preview, regardless of if they have permissions to the document itself. To remove the link preview for everyone in the channel, hover over it and press the ‘X’ that appears beside it.
Spark ideas in Slack and give them structure in Quip where you can organize, discuss, and evolve your team’s most important work. Use the ⚡ Shortcuts menu, Quick Actions in the app’s Home tab, or the /quip new slash command to create new documents and spreadsheet where your team can jump in together and get to work.
Everyone in the channel will see a document preview in Slack where they can jump in and build the document together.
Documents created from Slack will be placed in your private folder by default and can be link-shared to make it easier to collaborate on.
Once connected to Quip for Slack, users will automatically have their Quip notifications appear in Slack. Notifications will appear as a DM from the Quip for Slack app, including but not limited to:
To stop receiving duplicate notifications across devices, adjust your notification settings in Quip.
To stay in the loop on your team’s progress in Quip, connect your documents to Slack to get updates when documents are edited.
Connect a document or spreadsheet to a Slack channel by going to Document (or Spreadsheet) → Advanced → Connect to Slack.
Once connected, you can make changes to the types of notifications each document sends to Slack. You can also change the Slack channel where document updates are being posted to.
Note: Once a document is connected to a channel, all members of the channel will be able to see the updates that post to the channel, regardless of if they have permissions to the document itself.
To disconnect a document from a Slack channel, go to Document → Advanced → Slack: Posting Updates and select Disconnect Document.
Navigate to your files right in Slack. In the app’s Home tab, you’ll see a list of your favorites and recents and are able post them into channels easily.
In channels, you can quickly bring up your favorites and recents by typing /quip favs or /quip recents. A list of these files will appear as an ephemeral message for you to view or share any of them.
Alternatively, search for your files by clicking on the “Search a File” button in the app Home tab or by typing /quip search [keywords] in a message.
Extract important Slack messages from a channel and add them to a new or existing Quip document. To do so:
You’ll have options to select the document to add the message to, choose the text placement, and add the metadata from the message which includes the sender name, channel name, and timestamp.
Slash commands are a quick way to perform an action from the message composer./quip new Team Onboarding creates a new document named “Team Onboarding”/quip spreadsheet Revenue Projections creates a new spreadsheet named “Revenue Projections”/quip recents lists recently viewed or edited documents/quip favs lists favorite documents/quip search [keyword] searches document names for the keyword/quip help lists available commands
With Quip for Slack’s Add Spreadsheet Row step in Workflow Builder, you can do the following from right within Slack:
When creating a workflow, select Quip’s “Add a Spreadsheet Row” step to save form responses to a Quip Spreadsheet.
Note: Make sure your spreadsheet is ready to use before you connect it to your workflow. If you change the name of the document, individual sheet or columns, or move around the columns, your workflow will break. Additionally, the edits to the spreadsheet from the workflow builder action will be attributed to the workflow author instead of the user who submitted the form response. The number of entries is limited by the spreadsheet maximum number of cells which is currently 100,000 per spreadsheet.

To remove the Quip app from your Slack workspace, follow these instructions from Slack to remove an app.
A single Quip site can be linked to one Slack workspace (non-Enterprise Grid) or one Slack organization (Enterprise Grid) at a time. If a Quip site is already linked to another Slack workspace or organization, a new one cannot be connected till the other Slack workspace or organization is removed by contacting support.
A Slack workspace and Slack organization can only be linked to one Quip site at a time. If a Slack workspace/organization is already connected to another Quip site, a new one cannot be connected till the other Quip site is removed by contacting support.
Quip managed and child sites cannot connect to the same Slack organization or workspaces as the parent Quip site. Similarly if a Quip managed or child site is connected to a Slack organization or workspace, the parent Quip site would not be able to connect to it.
Similarly, there can only be one mapping between Quip users and Slack users:
