Quip provides a rich set of formatting tools for creating structured, readable documents. From the formatting toolbar and document menus, you can apply headings, text styles, create lists and tables, insert code blocks, and control document layout settings. This article provides an overview of all available formatting options and how to access them.
Select any text and use the formatting toolbar or keyboard shortcuts to apply:
Apply headings from the heading dropdown in the toolbar (H1, H2, H3) or using Markdown shortcuts (# for H1, ## for H2, ### for H3 followed by a space). Headings are used by the Document Outline to generate navigation and create collapsible sections.
To increase or decrease list indentation, use Tab and Shift+Tab.
Insert a table using the table icon in the toolbar or by typing @table. Alternatively, type @spreadsheet to insert a full spreadsheet. Tables are for displaying information; spreadsheets include formula support. See How to Use Spreadsheet and Table Layouts in Quip Documents for details.
Insert a code block by typing three backticks (```) at the start of a new line and pressing Enter, or use the code block button in the toolbar. Code blocks display in a monospace font and preserve formatting.
Insert a horizontal divider line by typing three dashes (---) on a new line and pressing Enter.
By default, Quip documents use a standard page width. To expand the content to full browser width, click Document > Advanced > Layout and choose Wide. This is useful for spreadsheets or content that benefits from more horizontal space.
Quip uses a fixed default font size. Individual font size changes are not supported as they create inconsistent chunking for Agentforce and are considered a formatting best practice to avoid. Use heading levels to establish visual hierarchy instead.
