How to Apply Text Alignment

To change the alignment of a paragraph, heading, or table cell:

  1. Click anywhere in the paragraph or cell you want to align, or select multiple paragraphs.
  2. Click the alignment buttons in the formatting toolbar — left, center, or right.

Alternatively, use keyboard shortcuts:

  • Left align: Cmd+Shift+L (Mac) / Ctrl+Shift+L (Windows)
  • Center align: Cmd+Shift+E (Mac) / Ctrl+Shift+E (Windows)
  • Right align: Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) / Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows)

Example: A sales rep creates a presentation-style document and centers the title at the top, while keeping the body paragraphs left-aligned for readability. She also right-aligns a price in a summary table to match the numeric formatting convention used in finance documents.

Alignment in Tables

Text alignment in table cells is set per cell. Select the cell (or multiple cells) and apply alignment the same way as for paragraphs. Alignment applied to a cell affects all text within that cell.

Default Alignment

Text in Quip documents is left-aligned by default. This is the standard and recommended alignment for body text as it provides the best readability for long-form content.

Alignment in Exports

  • PDF export: Text alignment is preserved in PDF exports.
  • Word (.docx) export: Text alignment is generally preserved, but complex table cell alignments may revert to default in some Word versions.
  • Markdown export: Alignment is not preserved in Markdown format — all text exports as unaligned left-justified Markdown.
