Bounce Management Explained

In Salesforce, there is a feature called "Bounce Management" that can be used to monitor the delivery of Emails. If a contact or a lead has an invalid email in the standard email field, that email gets bounced and Salesforce displays an invalid notification next to that email address that would not allow users to send email to the address until the email field is updated.

Undeliverable email is delivered to the sender rather than notifying the receiver.


To enable Bounce Management:

  1. System administrator needs to navigate to Setup | Deliverability
  2. Mark the ‘Activate bounce management’ checkbox

 

Note*
Bounced emails are specified into two categories - hard bounce and soft bounce.

Hard Bounce
Hard bounce can be an invalid domain name or an invalid username.   This email failure is permanently bounced back to the sender. A hard bounce it means the recipient's email address is invalid or no longer in use. Typically the domain name no longer exists or does not have a registered mail server. This could also be related to a user having a typo in the domain, such as "yaho" instead of "yahoo.com."

Soft Bounce
Soft bounce can be related to the recipient mail server not being available due to maintenance, being offline, a full mailbox, or the email address was removed from the server.

Note*
Emails that end with ".invalid" domain
Emails ending in .invalid are never sent from Salesforce. While they might show as "sent" in the UI, our mail server automatically discards them, as it recognizes them as invalid addresses intended for testing purposes only.

 

Solución

Bounce Email Management:

Once we send an email to an invalid email address, the email gets bounced. This bounced email can be shown in the Highlights panel on a Contact detail page as shown below.

Bounce email notifications get displayed in Activity.  With the help of this notification, the customer can update their email address. We can also make custom changes to update it.

Bounce email management is used to track whether the email from Salesforce is delivered to the customer or not. If the customer forgot to update the email address in the Account while sending an email to that customer, the email gets bounced and the notification is displayed on the Account detail page under Activities.

Bounce email can be tracked with custom reports.
