Why Markers Plot Incorrectly When Geocoding from Salesforce Maps

Veröffentlichungsdatum: Apr 20, 2026
Beschreibung

Salesforce Maps uses a geocoding engine to convert address text into map coordinates. Unlike consumer search engines such as Google or Bing, which use search databases and autocomplete to find addresses, Salesforce Maps passes the exact text from mapped address fields on the Base Object configuration to a geocoding vendor. When address data is incomplete, contains errors, or refers to a newly constructed location not yet in the vendor database, the resulting marker placement may be inaccurate or unexpected.

Lösung

Common geocoding issues and their causes:

  • Marker plots in the middle of a street if the house number is not found but the street is determined best match
  • If the best match is zip/postal code the marker will be plotted at this location. This is typically a post office location or the center of the zip code.
  • If the state/province or country is the best match the marker likely will plot at the respective capital city.
  • Markers plot off the western coast of Africa due to the latitude and longitude both having ‘0’ as a value. These values need to be null for geocoding to take place with Salesforce Maps because the engine recognizes (0,0) as valid map coordinates.
  • New construction addresses are plotting incorrectly or not at all. This usually occurs when the data might not have been provided to the vendor. The time that it takes for the vendor to receive and publish new address info varies based on processes at the local and state level.

Items not covered with Salesforce Maps Support:

  • Address data validation
  • Troubleshooting more than 5 addresses (must provide the desired address location and cited source)
  • Data Integration Rules
