Cannot switch to Data Category-Based Sharing in Salesforce Knowledge Sharing Settings

When attempting to turn off "Use standard Salesforce sharing" under Setup | Knowledge Settings | Sharing Settings in order to use Data Category-based sharing, you may get the following error:

"It looks like your data category and article version limits are too high for Data Category-based sharing. Continue to use standard sharing for Knowledge or ask Salesforce Customer Support to decrease your limits."

Due to the potential performance implications, Salesforce prevents you from switching to Data Category-based sharing if your organization's maximum allowed data category limits are above particular thresholds. See the below table for each limit and its threshold.
