Error 'FIELD_CUSTOM_VALIDATION_EXCEPTION' in Outlook Integration Side Panel

A first-time Outlook Integration user is greeted with a welcome mat that introduces the user to various Outlook Integration features. Outlook Integration app then updates an internal field of the user record so that the welcome mat is not subsequently displayed. When a custom validation rule on the User object prohibits such an update, the error is displayed.
Ratkaisu
The error message can be closed and the user can continue using Outlook Integration. But since the user record update fails, welcome mat messages will be displayed every time the user logs in, along with the validation rule error message and some other error messages.
