The below instructions use Sample - Superstore data and can be reviewed in the attached sample workbook.

Step 1: Create the View

  1. Place YEAR(Order Date) on Columns.
  2. Place Segment on Rows.
  3. Place City on Filters.
  4. Select only Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Fe, and Santa Maria, then click OK.
  5. Place SUM(Sales) on Text.

Step 2: Add Sales Rank

  1. Select Analysis > Create Calculated Field.
  2. Name the field Sales Rank, Enter the following formula, then click OK:
    RANK(SUM([Sales]))
  3. Place Sales Rank on Text.
  4. Place Sales Rank on Color.
You will notice nulls in Home Office, 2012 and Corporate, 2014.

Step 3: Remove Color from Nulls

  1. Drag 'Sales Rank' to the Filters shelf
  2. Choose Range of values, and include the entire range (in this case, from 1 to 4).
  3. Ensure that Include Null Values is unchecked.
  4. Click OK
