Opening Links In Separate Browser Windows or Tabs on Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud

Opgave

How to open links from URL actions and web URLs in separate browser tabs or windows and not in the same view or dashboard.

First of all, the URL/link set via URL action in the published dashboard opens in a new tab/window in the web browser by default, even if you don't add any options at the end of the dashboard URL when you first open it. This behavior is by design.

When you set the URL action to another Tableau dashboard, the dashboard opens in the new (second) tab/window upon clicking on part of the dashboard, which triggers the URL action. When the URL action is triggered from this newly opened dashboard on the second tab/window, however, the target (dashboard) opens in the same window/tab. (i.e. it will not open the third/new tab.)
Workaround steps below will force open it in a new tab/window.

Trin

To workaround this issue:

  1. Add ?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank at the end of the browser URL of the view or the dashboard published on Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud
    • Note: Do not append the URL parameter of the Action URL.
    • This embed parameter will force all external hyperlinks to open in a new tab.
  2. Ensure this new URL is being distributed to all the persons who use this view/dashboard.

Adding ?:embed=yes to the URL is not required to make this solution work. However, embedding the view in a webpage with the ?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank in the embed code will guarantee everyone who accesses the embedded view will open URL actions in new windows/tabs every time.
