Garbled Characters When Importing Esri Shapefile Including Japanese

Veröffentlichungsdatum: Apr 13, 2024
Beschreibung
When importing Esri shapefiles that includes Japanese, Tableau Desktop shows garbled characters.

Cause

Tableau imports spatial files as UTF-8 only.
Lösung
Many shapefiles provided from Japanese public institutions use the Shift-JIS character encoding. However, Tableau can only read files with UTF-8 encoding and does not allow for changes in import settings to accommodate different encodings. Therefore, it is necessary to change the file's character encoding to UTF-8 before loading it into Tableau.

Converting Options

  • Use GIS software such as QGIS to convert the character encoding to UTF-8. Changing the character encoding of an Esri Spatial File can be challenging without GIS software, but it is possible to directly change the file's character encoding.
  • Convert the Esri shapefile to GeoJSON. While changing the character encoding of an Esri shapefile directly can only be done with specific software, converting the Esri shapefile to a GeoJSON file allows you to change the character encoding in its text file state. GeoJSON files can be directly loaded into Tableau Desktop.
