When connecting Tableau Desktop to Microsoft Azure SQL, the following error may occur:
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server]TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server]Communication link failure
Unable to connect to the server "<servername>.database.windows.net". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.
The underlying cause may be an issue with Azure SQL firewall configuration, an Azure SQL service outage, name resolution, firewall or proxy configuration, or other network problems.
Please note: The Driver version specified may show a different number.
To troubleshoot this issue, try to connect to the same database from Excel by following the steps in Connect Excel to an Azure SQL database and create a report, up to Step 5.
If you are unable to obtain the list of tables or views in Step 5 please follow these steps:
