Error "The product key is invalid" Activating Tableau Desktop 10.5 or Older Using Key that Starts With TC

When activating Tableau Desktop using a new product key that starts with the letters TC, the following error occurs:


The product key is invalid. To avoid a mistyped key, copy the product key directly from the Tableau Customer Portal or from your Tableau Invoice.

The product key is invalid. Unspecified exception: ​(..)
 

Cause

New product keys starting with the letters TC are not recognized by Tableau Desktop versions released before version 2018.1.

Solución

If you have verified that the product key was entered correctly, and the key starts with the letters TC:

Upgrade Tableau Desktop to a currently supported version of the product. For more information, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop.
