Error: "Custom OAuth is not configured for this datasource. Learn more. (errorCode=170001)" When Adding a BigQuery Connection in Web Authoring

Date de publication: Apr 13, 2024
Description

When trying to add a BigQuery connection in web authoring (Desktop or Prep), the following error may occur:

Custom OAuth is not configured for this datasource. Learn more. (errorCode=170001)

Additionally, when publishing a flow that uses a Google BigQuery data source to Tableau Server, the only data source authentication option available is 'Prompt user', and the option to edit the BigQuery connection is unavailable in Tableau Server. Running the published flow may result in the following output step error message:

[InvalidConnectionCredentials] - Failed to connect to server <server id> with connection ID . The provided username/password combination was invalid.

Cause

The Tableau Server instance has not been configured with an OAuth client ID and secret for the BigQuery connector.
Résolution

Option 1 (OAuth Connection):

Configure the Tableau Server with an OAuth client ID and secret for the BigQuery connector. See Change Google OAuth to Saved Credentials.

Alternatively, use the following workaround:
  1. In Tableau Desktop, create the BigQuery data source.
  2. Publish the data source to Tableau Server.
  3. In Tableau Prep Builder (or web authoring), connect to the published data source, and then create and publish the flow.

Option 2 (Use the Service Account):

Add a Google BigQuery service account JSON key file as the saved Google BigQuery credentials under account settings. See Sign In using the Service Account (JSON) file.
