Tableau Server TSM Commands Fail With "500 - Server Error"or "Internal Server Error"

When TSM commands fail to execute and the logs show errors such as "500 - Server Error" or "Internal Server Error" the disk may be full on the Tableau Server machine.  Here is a sample log output showing the errors: 

2019-07-22 10:56:25 main : DEBUG com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.TSMErrorHandler - TabadminController did not return a TsmResponse.

Løsning

In order to resolve the inability to run TSM commands that receive the "Internal Server Error", you will need to delete files to free up some disk space.

For more specific information on monitoring and removing unneeded files, please see the Tableau Help guide, Remove Unneeded Files.   The following files can take up space on the Tableau Server machine and may not be needed:

  • Old backups
  • Old log files
  • Stale Content
  • Any files outside of Tableau directories that are third-party files

The Stale Content Admin view is an excellent resource to manage content, and if you have Advanced Management on your Tableau Server, you can use the Tableau Content Migration Tool to manage archiving stale content on a regular schedule.
