When using a custom shape and selecting a color from the Color dropdown on the Marks card, then the custom shape is appears black in the view.
Tableau Desktop will not overwrite the colour of a custom shape unless a field is added to Colour. This design prevents Tableau Desktop from re-coloring custom shapes that not designed to work with Tableau's colour encoding.
