Tableau Desktop error when activating a product key:

No License found for 'TableauDesktop'

Cause

  • The product key has expired or the wrong type of key was used.  Tableau Server product keys start with the letters "TS" while keys to be activated on Tableau Desktop or Prep will start with "TC" or "TD".

  • A third-party testing program may lock the time and the time is earlier than the key generation time. e.g. The clock time is 2023/08/14 11:00:00 and is current. But, a third-party program can lock the time as 2022/10/10 10:00:00 so that other software will use 2022/10/10 as system time but not the system clock time 2023/08/14 11:00:00.
Ratkaisu

Wrong Product Key Used

Visit the Tableau Customer Portal to obtain the current product key.  For more information on finding your key in the Tableau Customer Portal, please visit this article for assistance.

Please note: For new purchases, there may be no Desktop key issued in the Tableau Customer Portal.  This error can occur when trying to use the Tableau Server Creator key to activate Tableau Desktop.

  • With new purchases of a Creator seat, either a Tableau Cloud Site or a Tableau Server key will be issued.
  • Activating Tableau Desktop will use the LBLM activation method to "sign in to a server" which requires no product key.

If still using product keys and you have attempted to activate the license obtained from the Tableau Customer Portal but still receiving the error, please review the Desktop Troubleshooting information here.  See Step 2 under "Resolve FlexNet licensing errors when activating or opening Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder" which has been helpful to some customers to resolve this issue.

Third-Party Software Locked System Clock
When testing, third-party software can be used to set a machine's time. If the time is locked by third-party program, please work with your IT Team to remove the machine clock adjustment.  The machine itself will report the correct time in this case, but the Tableau NOW() function will return the date/time of the third-party software.
