When using a Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server password which you know to be correct in the tabcmd utility, one of the following errors may occur:
*** Not authorized Authentication failed. (errorCode=16)
or
***Not authorized. Invalid username or password. (errorCode=16)
This behavior results from a limitation of the Windows Command Prompt, rather than Tableau Server or Online. The listed characters are used as operators in Windows Command Prompt and cannot be used as part of a password in tabcmd.
====
This also happens when SAML is used and the user is imported via IDP. The REST API and tabcmd do not support SAML single-sign (SSO).
Change the password for Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server to one which does not use the following characters or combinations of characters:
| < > \ ^ + = ? / [ ] ” ; , * : %
">>" ">&" "<&"
