Error "The load was not able to complete successfully" Opening Workbook on Tableau Desktop

When opening a workbook with Tableau Desktop, the following error message might occur:

Errors occurred while trying to load the workbook "<workbook name>". The load was not able to complete successfully.
An unexpected error occurred opening the packaged workbook. 
 
Additionally, the following message can be found in the log.txt:

GenerateTempDirectory: failed to create subdirectory in 'C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp\TableauTemp'

Cause

Permissions are preventing Tableau Desktop from creating the necessary temporary folders.

Option 1

Because one of the possible issues when opening a workbook on Tableau Desktop is due to permissions, please review the following:

1. Find the log.txt file located in Documents\My Tableau Repository\Logs.
2. Open the log.txt file with a simple editor and search for "failed to create subdirectory".
3. Work with your IT team to grant permission to the subdirectory specified in the error log. 

Option 2

If the error received shows a problem with a data source, please review this article specific to opening workbooks and data source errors.
