During an upgrade of Tableau Server on an existing machine, the installation process may fail due to leftover files and configurations from the previous installation.
This issue can arise due to:
• Conflicting installation files from the previous version.
• Incomplete uninstallation of the older Tableau Server version.
• Corrupted system files or registry entries related to Tableau Server.
Step 1: Backup Your Tableau Server Data
Before proceeding with uninstallation, create a full backup to prevent data loss:
tsm maintenance backup -f <backup_file_name>
• Ensure that the backup file is stored in a secure location before continuing.
Step 2: Uninstall Existing Tableau Server
1. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
2. Locate Tableau Server, right-click, and select Uninstall.
3. If using a multi-node (distributed) environment, uninstall Tableau Server from the primary node first.
Note: Uninstalling the application removes the software but does not delete your data or configurations.
Step 3: Manually Remove Residual Files
Even after uninstallation, some directories and settings remain on the system. Delete the following directories manually. Navigate to these locations in File Explorer and delete them manually:
• C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server
• C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server
Important: Deleting these directories removes all existing content, preventing the new installation from attempting to reuse outdated files.
Step 4: Install the New Version of Tableau Server
1. Download the latest Tableau Server installer from here: https://www.tableau.com/support/releases/server
2. Run the installation file and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Complete the installation process and reconfigure settings if necessary.
Step 5: Restore Your Data
Once the installation is complete, restore your previous data using the backup file created earlier:
tsm maintenance restore -f <backup_file_name>
