Fields Used in a View are No Longer Visible in Columns and Rows Shelves

Description
When viewing a workbook, fields used in a view might not appear in the Columns or Rows shelf. New fields cannot be dragged to either column.

Cause

When the Rows or Columns shelf is resized, even by a single pixel, it switches into a mode where fields appear vertically rather than horizontally. When in this mode, you cannot drop any pill directly to the right of the row label even though the box is highlighted orange.
Resolution
Resize the Columns and Rows shelves to the minimum size allowed.
