Some Google Analytics Dimensions And/Or Metrics Appear Greyed Out

Description
When trying to select dimensions or measures from the Google Analytics data souce pane, some dimensions or metrics cannot be selected.
  • Example 1:  goalCompletionLocation – incompatible with most other dimensions.
  • Example 2:  AdWords metrics/dimensions – incompatible with lots of other dimensions and metrics.
 

 

Cause

This is a limitation of the Google Analytics API. 

Analytics API will return an error if incompatible metrics are selected as part of the same query. Tableau Desktop will show incompatible dimensions or metrics as greyed out.
Resolution
Some Google Analytics dimensions or metrics are not compatible with one another and cannot be combined in a report or the same view.
