Authentication Error: "FATAL 3871 Invalid username or password." When Using a TDC File with Vertica

Description
After implementing a .TDC file for Vertica on Tableau Server, the data connection to the Vertica server may no longer be working properly. Issue may be presented in a few different ways:
  • Viewing dashboards published to Tableau Server prompts to log into Vertica database and credentials are not accepted.
  • Embedded passwords do not appear to be persisting after publishing to Tableau Server.
  • Unable to refresh any extract using a .tdc file with Vertica. Error message "FATAL 3871 Invalid username or password" 

Cause

The required TDC file is missing from Tableau Desktop, or the TDC file on Tableau Desktop differs from the TDC file on Tableau Server.
Résolution

Review the .TDC files for possible syntax errors or misspellings. If there is any difference between the two .TDC files, there will be authentication errors.
