Timeout Occurs When Publishing or Downloading Extract

Publiceringsdatum: Sep 24, 2025
Beskrivning

When you try to publish a large (2 GB) extract to Tableau Server, a timeout error occurs. This error may also occur when you try to download a large extract from Tableau Server.

Lösning

Increase the timeout limit for Tableau Desktop.

  1. Exit all sessions of Tableau Desktop that are running on the machine.
  2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your Tableau repository.

    For example, C:\Users\<username>\My Documents\My Tableau Repository

  3. Open Preferences.tps in a text editor such as Notepad.
  4. Between the <preferences> and </preferences> tags, paste the following code:

    <preference name="connection.send.timeout" value="1800000" />
    <preference name="connection.receive.timeout" value="1800000" />

  5. Save the file. The file’s contents should now look like this:

    <workbook>
    <preferences>
    <preference name="connection.send.timeout" value="1800000" />
    <preference name="connection.receive.timeout" value="1800000" />
    </preferences>
    </workbook>

  6. Increase the timeout limit for Tableau Server as described in this article: Timeout when Publishing or Viewing.

Please note that for Tableau Server 10.4 or later versions, the changes to the preferences.tps file are not applicable for errors that are only received during the publication process.

Ytterligare resurser
  • If your Tableau repository is in a location other than the default provided in the steps above, you can determine the exact location by selecting File > Repository Location in Tableau Desktop.
  • The suggested value of 1800000 is 30 minutes in milliseconds. For very large workbooks you might need to increase this value even further.
