Error "FATAL: password authentication failed for user " When Connecting to Redshift

When you try to connect to Amazon Redshift from Tableau Desktop, if the database password contains special characters, one of the following errors might occur:
 

An error occurred while communicating with the data source.
Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.
FATAL: password authentication failed for user "<user name>"

Unable to connect to the server "<server name>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Invalid username or password

Cause

This behavior is related to a limitation of Amazon Redshift. For more information, see Limits in Amazon Redshift, which mentions the following requirements in regards to passwords, "It can use any ASCII characters with ASCII codes 33–126, except ' (single quote), " (double quote), \, /, or @".

Løsning
Remove all special characters from the Redshift password. There are other naming constraints that can cause errors when connecting to Amazon Redshift. Please refer to Limits in Amazon Redshift and scroll down to Naming Constraints.
