Colors Change After Replacing Data Source on Tableau View

Fecha de publicación: May 13, 2025
Descripción

After replacing a data source in Tableau, colors that were previously defined revert to the default color palette.

Cause

Issues with unexpected formatting behaviors can occur replacing data sources in Tableau Desktop, although many have been resolved.

Solución

When a Tableau calculated field with custom colors already exists in the new data source, the colors are preserved when the data source is replaced.  If the calculated field does not yet exist in the new data source, it will automatically be copied over when you replace the data source, but the colors will revert to default.

Manually copy the calculated fields over to the new data source before replacing the data source to preserve the colors:
1. Add the new data source.
2. Copy and paste the calculations, groups, and set fields to the new data source.
3. Right-click and replace the old data source with the new one.

Desktop versions

Various updates to Tableau Desktop have been completed.  Please ensure you are using the latest supported version to have all the most recent software updates. Tableau Desktop versions and downloads are available from the Release Notes page.

If you continue to experience the loss of the custom color palette after replacing the data source, please contact Tableau Technical Support for assistance.
