Error "Connection attempt failed: could not translate host name ... to address" Opening Workbook

Beskrivelse

When viewing a workbook published to Tableau Server the following error might occur:


TableauException: <driver version> Connection attempt failed: could not translate host name "<server name>" to address: Unknown host Unable to connect to the server "<server name>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database. 
 
Workbook can be viewed in Tableau Desktop without issue.
 

Cause

The computer running Tableau Server cannot resolve the IP address of the server name used in the data connection.

 

Løsning

Option 1

Work with local IT team to ensure that the computer running Tableau Server can resolve the IP address of the server named in the error message.

 

Option 2

In Tableau Desktop, edit the connection and replace the server name in database connection with the IP address of the database server.

Note: This option works only if the computer running Tableau Server can connect to the database server with the IP address.
