Description
When you try to connect to Microsoft SQL Server from Tableau Desktop on a Mac, the following error might occur:
 
The drivers necessary to connect to this database server are not properly installed. Visit http://www.tableausoftware.com/drivers to download driver setup files.
[iODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found and no default driver specified. Driver could not be loaded.

or


"Download and install drivers, and then connect"

Cause

A permission problem where the drivers are installed which causes the required odbcinst.ini file to not have the entries needed by the product to detect the SQL Server driver.
Résolution

Step 1

Download and install the Microsoft SQL Server driver for the Mac. For more information, see Drivers & Activation on the Tableau website.

Step 2

Open the iODBC Administrator:

  1. Click on Finder.
  2. In the search box, type iODBC Administrator. If the iODBC Administrator is not found, you can just go to the Utilities folder and locate the application.
  3. Double-click on iODBC Administrator.
  4. If the iODBC Driver Manager is not installed on your Mac, install it. The latest version (mxkozzz.dmg) can be downloaded from the iODBC.org website.

​Step 3

​​Configure the Driver:

  1. In the iODBC Administrator, select the Drivers tab.
  2. Click Add.
  3. In the Description section, enter Simba SQL Server ODBC Driver.
  4. Next to the Driver file field, click Choose to browse the correct driver file.
  5. Navigate to the location of the ‘libsimbasqlderverodbc.dylib’ file. The location should be similar to the following: /opt/simba/sqlserverodbc/lib/universal/libsimbasqlserverodbc.dylib
  6. Once located, click Choose.
  7. Under Define as select System.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click Apply.
