Users may encounter the “User Specific View” thumbnail instead of an expected visualization preview in the following scenarios:
1. Viewer Credentials Authentication is enabled.
2. Impersonation via Run As User Account is configured.
3. The view contains user-specific filters (Row-Level Security).
Example Scenario:
• If different users see different data based on permissions or row-level security, Tableau prevents the thumbnail from displaying unauthorized information to ensure privacy.
Cause
This behavior is by design in Tableau Server. The system detects the presence of user filters, impersonation, or per-user credentials and replaces the actual thumbnail with a generic placeholder to avoid potential data leaks.
Why does this happen?
• If Tableau allowed automatic thumbnails in user-specific views, there’s a chance that unauthorized users could see restricted data in the thumbnail preview.
• Workbooks and views follow stricter rules than projects, which allow setting custom images without being overridden.
This is expected behavior, but there are workarounds to customize the thumbnail.
Option 1: Use a Custom Image as a Thumbnail (Manual Method)
• Similar to how project images are customized, you can use a custom image for workbooks and views:
1. Publish the workbook.
2. After publication, edit the Information field.
3. Add a web-hosted image URL wrapped in exclamation marks (!), just like in this guide.
4. Save the changes.
5. Users will see the custom thumbnail only when they hover/click the information icon.
Limitation: The image needs to be reapplied after each workbook update.
Option 2: Remove User-Specific Filtering (If Applicable)
• If security concerns allow, removing user filters will allow Tableau to generate standard thumbnails.
• However, this may expose sensitive data in thumbnails, so proceed with caution.
Alternative Feature Request
• Feedback Suggestion: Enable custom images for workbooks/views similar to project images.
• Ideally, Tableau should allow overriding the default ‘User Specific View’ image with a custom URL just like project thumbnails.
