“License Has Changed” Warning or Licensing is Lost When Using Tableau Desktop on Virtual Machine

Date de publication: Feb 24, 2026
Description

When using a virtual machine with Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder, you may get a warning message that your license information has changed, or prompted to activate, whenever the application is launched.

Cause

Because Tableau product licensing is linked to the hardware of the host, even with virtual machines, some virtual machines will change physical hardware during an instance restart/reboot. This will, therefore, break any existing licensing. In these situations, the behavior is expected.

Résolution

Leverage Virtual Desktop Support, and ideally, Login-Based License Management (LBLM), as described in Tableau Product Help, making sure to set the ATR requested duration to a value that roughly corresponds to the frequency of VM recycling.  While it will be necessary to re-license when VMs are recycled, leveraging these features will mitigate against hitting maximum activation.
