Unable to Connect to Non-Default Catalogs in Amazon Athena from Tableau

Issue

When creating a connection to Amazon Athena, the only Catalog listed in the Catalog drop-down menu is the default 'AwsDataCatalog'.

Environment

Amazon Athena, Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, Tableau Cloud, and Tableau Prep Builder 

Cause

A specific setting must be enabled via the JDBC driver for all catalogs to show.

Ratkaisu

Create an 'Athena.properties' containing a specific setting and place it in the Tableau directory:

  1. Open a text editor.
  2. Copy and paste the following value: MetadataRetrievalMethod=ProxyAPI
  3. Save the file named as 'Athena.properties'
  4. Place the file in one of the following directories:
    1. Tableau Desktop: ...\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Datasources\
    2. Tableau Prep Builder: ...\Documents\My Tableau Prep Repository\Datasources
    3. Tableau Server: ...\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\vizqlserver\Datasources\ 

Tableau Cloud

  1. Complete the Tableau Desktop step above to connect to a non-default Catalog.
  2. Publish the data source or workbook to Tableau Cloud through Tableau Bridge.
