When utilizing Tableau Bridge to connect to data or perform Extract Creation involving an embedded data source or a Virtual Connection, one of two primary symptoms may be observed:
Extended Duration: The connection process may take longer than anticipated to complete.
Timeout Failure: The connection attempt may result in a 15-minute timeout failure, typically generating the error:
Unknown error: TableauException: An error occurred while accessing data. Contact your Tableau administrator. (code=13).
To verify the extract creation task type, refer to Using Embedded Data Sources > Viewing refresh jobs
The issue stems from how Tableau Bridge handles these specific types of extracts:
Execution as a Live Query: Embedded Data Sources and Virtual Connection extracts refreshed via Tableau Bridge utilize a live query mechanism. The extract file (hyper file) is written on the Tableau Cloud rather than on the Tableau Bridge client machine.
15-Minute Timeout Limit: The live query process has 15-minute timeout limit. If the data processing or network latency causes the operation to exceed this limit, the job is canceled, resulting in the code=13 failure.
For more information on the limit, see Plan Your Bridge Deployment > Timeout limits.
To avoid both the extended duration and the 15-minute timeout, the best practice is to publish the data source separately from the workbook and refresh the published data source instead of the workbook without connecting to virtual connection.
SeePublish a Data Source for publication steps.
See Set Up a Private Network Refresh Schedule > Set up a schedule for scheduling steps.
The live query time limit is 15 minutes. For more details, see Plan Your Bridge Deployment > Timeout limits.
The live query includes the following:
