ATR Server Activation Error "The server encountered an unexpected error processing the request"

Server Error occurs in TSM Web UI or the TSM command line when activating Tableau Server using the Authorization-To-Run (ATR) Service:

Server Error
The server encountered an unexpected error processing the request. Look at the server logs for more information.


After running "tsm licenses activate --license-key <product key>" instead, the following error can be found in tsm.log:

ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.TSMErrorHandler - An error occurred: 500000, Internal Server Error
ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.cli.Console - Internal Server Error: The server encountered an unexpected error processing the request. Look at the server logs for more information.

 

Cause

There are several scenarios that cause this error including:
  • To access and subsequently configure product key information for Tableau Server installation, the Windows service, Tableau Server Administrative Controller, must run under the Run As service account.
  • An invalid key was entered that contained a typo or is a Desktop key that starts with "TC".
  • The key is maximum activated.

Option 1 

Check the Tableau Customer Portal and verify the license key entered does not have a typo.  Common typos are 0 and O, S and 5, and B and 8.  The license key should begin with the letters "TS" and not "TC".

Option 2

If the Run As User is set to the default NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService account, replace it with a domain account, then Activate or deactivate Tableau product keys. For more information see Configure Product Key Operations with Forward Proxy.

If a domain account has been configured for Run As User, make sure that the domain account can be authenticated with Forward Proxy. Change the account if necessary. See Change the Run As Service Account.

Option 3

For a maximum activation issue, deactivate the licenses on an installation that is over the allowed capacity stated by our EULA.
