Snapshot Data with Tableau Pulse

How can I get the Tableau Pulse Big Aggregated Number (BAN) for my point-in-time, snapped metric (i.e. ARR or AUM) to show the last aggregate number?

What counts as a snapped metric?

A snapped metric is any metric where you’re trying to understand “what did my data look like on X day?”. The most common example is probably Open Pipeline over time. Since opportunity values frequently change, the only way for us to know what our Total Pipeline looked like yesterday is to take a look at a snapshot of the data taken yesterday. Open pipe today with a close date of yesterday is actually just today’s value for any open opportunities with a close date of yesterday.

Vaiheet

To get Tableau Pulse BAN for my point-in-time, snapped metric (i.e. ARR or AUM) to show the last aggregate number, follow the steps below:

  1. In your metric definition, open the Advanced Definition editor and create a calculated field like the following example using your own relevant data fields:

  1. In the Advanced Definition editor, drag the calculated field (i.e. Adjusted Amount) into the Measure box and your Date dimension (i.e. Snap Date) into the Time Dimension field
    1. Make sure to apply an aggregation (i.e., "SUM") to the measure.  ATTR is not supported in the advanced editor.
  2. Save

Need to build a snapped data source?

  • If you have a "change log" style dataset (with Record Start/End Dates): Date Scafolding
  • To build a snapshot dataset, you can use Tableau Prep or other ETL tools
