Transferring a WhatsApp Phone Number Between WhatsApp Business Accounts (WABAs) in Marketing Cloud Engagement (Meta)

If you’re using WhatsApp-First Business Messaging, you can move a WhatsApp Phone Number between WhatsApp Business Accounts (WABAs) within a Marketing Cloud Engagement business unit. 

The steps below will ensure all approved templates are transferred and synced properly for use.

1. Turn off two-factor authentication

  • Load the WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) associated with the phone number in WhatsApp Manager
  • Within the menu on the left-hand side, navigate to Account tools > Phone Numbers.
  • Use the dropdown menu on the top-right to select the WABA associated with the phone number.
  • Click the phone number's settings (gear) icon.
  • Select 'Turn off two-step verification'

2. Access your Marketing Cloud instance, complete the Embedded Sign-Up flow by selecting an existing or creating a new WhatsApp Business Account you wish to transfer the Phone Number to.

Important Note : The "WhatsApp Business Profile Display Name" is what customers will see on WhatsApp. As per Meta rules, this MUST BE the same Display Name used in the previous WhatsApp Business Account (WABA). This is a critical point. Otherwise, the transfer can fail.

3. Validate the transfer was completed successfully

  • Access your WhatsApp Manager
  • Within the menu on the left-hand side, navigate to Account tools > Phone Numbers.
    • Confirm the WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) in the upper right-hand matches the WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) receiving the transferred Phone Number.
      • Note : The transferred Phone Number should show either 'Migrated' or 'Transferred' Status initially, but once processed (5-15 minutes), the Status will update to 'Connected'.

Once completed, all content/templates and Quality Ratings will carry over without any issues.
