This article explains how the "Times Used" field in Salesforce Email Templates increments, and which send methods do and do not trigger the counter. The "Times Used" field is a system-tracked counter on the Email Template record that shows how many times the template has been actively used to send an email.
The "Times Used" field on an Email Template increments when the template is used through the following methods:
Important: The "Times Used" field does not increment when the template is used in Email Alerts configured within workflow rules or Process Builder. This is expected behavior — Email Alerts process the template differently and do not update the counter.
