Size Considerations for Quip Documents and Spreadsheets

Document Size

Quip documents do not have a hard character or page limit, but very long documents degrade performance for all users viewing them. The recommended best practices are:

• Keep individual documents focused on a single topic or project phase. If a document exceeds 20-30 pages of dense content, consider splitting it into linked sub-documents.
• Use the Document Outline and collapsible sections to help users navigate long documents without requiring excessive scrolling.
• Avoid embedding large numbers of images without alt text — large embedded images increase document size and slow loading.

Example: A team using a single Quip document for an entire year's project notes finds the document growing unwieldy. They split it into quarterly documents linked from a master index document — each quarterly document loads quickly and the index provides easy navigation.

Spreadsheet Cell Limits

• Recommended maximum: 100,000 cells per spreadsheet
• Spreadsheets exceeding 100,000 cells experience reduced performance, slower formula recalculation, and may fail to export correctly
• If a spreadsheet must handle large datasets, split it into multiple sheets within the same spreadsheet, or use Data References to pull in data from smaller source spreadsheets

Live Apps Per Document

• Recommended maximum: 5 Live Apps per document
• Documents with more than 10 Live Apps experience reduced performance, syncing issues, and may fail to export entirely
• Kanban Boards should contain no more than 50 cards — boards exceeding this may become uneditable

Salesforce Reports and Live Data Mentions

• Recommended maximum: 20 live Salesforce reports and Live Data Mentions per document
• In documents combining both Salesforce reports and data mentions, disable automatic refresh and refresh manually to reduce performance impact
• If a Document contains more than 20 Live Data Mentions, it may fail to export to PDF.
• Individual Salesforce reports display a maximum of 2,000 rows in Quip

Exported File Size

• Documents with many images or embedded content may produce very large PDF exports. For large documents, export individual sections rather than the full document if the file size causes issues.
• Spreadsheets with charts may not export charts to Word or CSV format — use PDF export to preserve chart output.
